1971 Dodge Charger R/T Engine Options and Specifications

In 1971 the Dodge Charger R/T could be ordered with three different high performance engine options.

For the 1971 Charger R/T, the 440 High Performance 4 barrel engine was the standard engine. Two engine options were available including the 440 Six Pack and the 426 Hemi.

1971 Dodge Charger R/T Engine Options and Specifications

The 1971 Charger R/T was available with the following three engines.

  • 440 High Performance 4-barrel (Standard)
  • 440 Six Pack (Optional)
  • 426 Hemi (Optional)

In 1971 manufacturers began rating horsepower and torque with gross and net ratings.

1971 Charger R/T With a 440 High Performance 4-barrel

The 440 High Performance 4-barrel was available as the standard engine for the 1971 Charger R/T.

The gross horsepower decreased from 375 to 370 compared to the previous year.

The engine code was E86 although it did not need to be ordered. Dodge called it the 440 Magnum. Let’s take a look at the specifications.

1971 Charger R/T With a 440 Six Pack

The 440 Six Pack was available as an option for the 1971 Charger R/T. From the previous year the gross horsepower decreased from 390 to 385 and the compression ratio from 10.5:1 to 10.3:1.

The 426 Hemi was available as an option for the 1971 Charger R/T. The Hemi was the only engine in 1971 which did not see a decrease in horsepower or compression ratio.
