Factory Transmissions Available for the 413 Max Wedge Engine

The 413 Max Wedge engine and cars get all the attention but some people wonder which transmissions were offered.

The 413 Max Wedge engine came standard with a Borg Warner T-85 close ratio three speed manual transmission. An automatic 727 torqueflite transmission was available as an option.

The T-85 manual was shifted using a floor mounted shifter. The automatic was shifted with the push buttons on the left side of the dashboard.

The manual transmission came with the following gear ratios:

  • 1st Gear: 2.10
  • 2nd Gear: 1.45
  • 3rd Gear: 1 to 1

The automatic transmission came with the following gear ratios:

  • 1st gear: 2.45
  • 2nd gear: 1.45
  • 3rd gear: 1 to 1

The remainder of this article will provide more details about each transmission. This includes the clutch, shifter, bell housing, torque converter and part numbers.

413 Max Wedge Manual Transmission Specs

The new Borg Warner T-85 manual transmission was specifically engineered for maximum performance and durability. It came standard with the 413 Max Wedge engine.

It had new shafts, shot-peened gears and extensions for added strength.

The closely spaced gear ratios were possible due to the Max Wedge’s engine power.

To transmit that power to the transmission, the following clutch components were used:

  • A heavy duty 10 1/2″ clutch.
  • Pearlitic malleable-iron pressure plate.
  • Special high burst speed clutch disc.

To save weight, an aluminum housing for the clutch was used. The transmission case is made of cast iron.

The floor mounted shifter had a chrome shaft with a round chrome-plated handle.

The Dodge and Plymouth manuals recommend the following for maximum performance:

Faster shifting with the manual transmission can be achieved by installing a spring-loaded straight-through shifting mechanism (Hurst-Campbell or comparable device).

Clutch Free-Play Adjustment:

  • Minumum: 1/2″
  • Maximum: 3/4″

For lubricant Chrysler recommended multi-purpose lubricant, or lubricant designated for “API” service.

The heavy duty 727 Torque-flite automatic transmission was available as an option.

The durable transmission has special high-capacity components. It has a heavy duty front clutch, governor and a lockdown band is included.

From the factory it is set to upshift at engine speeds up to 5,600 r.p.m.

The maximum torque convertor ratio is 2.2 to 1. The maximum over-all “breakaway ratio” (5.39 to 1) and efficiency was the highest of any stock automatic transmission.

The transmission housing is made of aluminum and is not painted.

The Chrysler pushbutton transmission controls has a cable shift mechanism and is mounted on the left side of the dashboard.

The Max Wedge transmission requires a special filler tube and dipstick for clearance because of the intake and exhaust manifold shapes and sizes.

My first experience with a pushbutton transmission was around 1983. My friend asked me to move his Uncle’s car which was a 1962 Plymouth. It wasn’t a Max Wedge car but it’s a moment I’ll never forget,

About 38 years ago I assembled my first Mopar engine. It’s at that time my hands on experience with Mopar engines, including the Max Wedge, started. Although my research of the engines started years earlier.
