Mopar Stock 440 Carb Numbers and Specs

All the years from 1966-1974 are covered. The 1974 440 was the last year the high-performance option was available in production cars.

The carburetor numbers are the same whether the 440 engine was on a Dodge, Plymouth or Chrysler.

Most of the carburetors were manufactured by Carter. The remainder were Holley carbs.

  • AFB: Aluminum Four Barrel (Carter)
  • AVS: Air Valve Secondary (Carter)
  • R: Holley Four Barrel

The carb numbers for many of the years were different for California, ECS, CAP or CAS emission systems.

Mopar 440 Carter Carburetor List Number Location

The 440 Carter carburetor list numbers can be found stamped into the base of the carburetor. Typically, they are on the front, passenger side of the base.

The list number is usually found directly above the date code.

440 Carter Carburetor Date Codes

The earlier Carter carbs have a build date directly underneath the part number. The later ones have the build date to the left of the part number.

The build date consists of a letter and a number. The letter indicates the month and the number indicates the last number of the year.

The letter “I” was skipped to avoid someone confusing it with the number 1. The letters in the build date represent the following months:

  • A=January
  • B=February
  • C=March
  • D=April
  • E=May
  • F=June
  • G=July
  • H=August
  • I (Skipped)
  • J=September
  • K=October
  • L=November
  • M=December

Therefore, a build date F9 indicates June 1969.

A 1967 440 Carter AFB carb with the date code of H6 indicates August 1966.

In later years, like the 1974 440 Thermo-Quad carburetor, five numbers were used. The first three was the build day and the last two the year.

A 1974 440 Carter carb (6460S) with a date code of 21173 indicates the 211th day of 1973.

440 Holley Carburetor List Number Location

On the 4160 Holley carburetors, the Holley list number is typically located on the body of the carburetor, on the throttle lever side of the air horn.

It is located on the left side of the air horn close to the top of the carb body.

Depending on the year of the carburetor, the list number is denoted with “R,” while later years may be stamped with “L” meaning List. It may also spell out the word “List.”

There may be four numbers directly above the list number which is the date code. Continue reading further in this article for date codes.

440 Holley Carburetor Date Codes

The Holley date codes are typically stamped on the carburetor body directly above the list number.

The date code consists of four numbers. The carb date does not go by the Chrysler 10,000 day calendar.

The first three numbers indicate the day of the year and the fourth number indicates the year.

Therefore, a date code of 3619 from a 1970 440 Holley carb indicates the 361st day of the year (December 21st). The 9 indicates the year 1969 (December 21, 1969).

A 1972 440 HP Holley 6160A carburetor with a date code of 2031. This would indicate July 22, 1971.
